Why

Cabbage and napa cabbage offer fiber and vitamins with few calories. Raw cabbage in larger amounts readily causes gas and bloating, and very large amounts over time may affect thyroid function, so it's best cooked and given in moderation. Kimchi and other seasoned cabbage dishes contain garlic, green onion and salt.

How to give it / if eaten

Wash, blanch or steam without seasoning and chop finely. A spoonful or two for cats and small dogs, a bit more for large dogs, within 10% of daily calories.

Watch for these signs

Too much causes gas, flatulence, bloating or loose stool. Start small the first time and check the stool.

FAQ

Is napa cabbage okay like regular cabbage?

Yes, plain blanched napa cabbage in small amounts is fine. Never give kimchi or freshly seasoned cabbage salad.

Can I give cabbage juice?

Human cabbage juice is concentrated, can upset the stomach and may contain other ingredients. A little cooked cabbage is better.
