Why

Soybean and mung bean sprouts are watery, fibrous and low in calories. Raw sprouts can carry bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli, so always cook them. Long, thin stems swallowed whole can catch in the throat. Seasoned sprouts and bean sprout soup contain garlic, green onion and salt and shouldn't be shared.

How to give it / if eaten

Blanch the sprouts plain and cut them into short 2โ€“3 cm pieces. About a teaspoon for cats and small dogs and a tablespoon or two for large dogs is plenty. Start small and check the stool.

Watch for these signs

Too much may cause gas, loose stool or diarrhea. Vomiting, diarrhea or fever after raw sprouts may signal food poisoning.
