Why
Green onions, scallions, leeks, chives and garlic chives are all alliums, sharing the same red-blood-cell-damaging sulfur compounds as onion and garlic. Chives and similarly pungent types are thought to be especially potent. Many dishes, from soups and stews to savory pancakes and dipping sauces, include them, so pets often get them by accident. Cats are more sensitive than dogs.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet ate green onion, leek or chives, contact your vet or an emergency clinic right away and tell them the time, amount and dish. Anemia can appear late, so don't just wait it out, and don't induce vomiting at home without a vet's instruction.
Watch for these signs
Possibly vomiting, diarrhea or poor appetite first, then 1โ5 days later pale gums, tiring easily, rapid breathing and red or brown urine.
FAQ
Is soup with green onion or a bite of scallion pancake dangerous?
Cooking doesn't remove the toxin, so it can be. A single small bite may not cause harm, but it depends on body weight, so check with your vet and avoid it from now on.
Are garlic chives and wild chives off-limits too?
Yes. They're alliums too and should be avoided for the same reason, including in side dishes and sauces.
General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
