Can dogs and cats eat Lettuce?

Lettuce is watery and low in calories, so it's fine for dogs and cats in small amounts; wash it well and chop it small.

Why

Lettuce is mostly water, isn't toxic and is low in calories, so some people use it as a diet treat. It isn't very nutritious, and too much fiber can cause diarrhea or gas. Large whole leaves may be gulped and cause gagging. Don't give lettuce with ssamjang or dressing on it.

How to give it / if eaten

Rinse it well under running water and chop it finely. A leaf or two for cats and small dogs and a few leaves for large dogs is plenty. Start small and check the stool.

Watch for these signs

Too much may cause loose stool, diarrhea or gas. A big leaf swallowed whole can cause gagging or vomiting.

FAQ

Does lettuce make dogs sleepy like people say?

Lettuce stems contain lactucarium, but at normal eating amounts the effect is negligible. It's not a concern for pets either.

Can I give leftover lettuce from a ssam meal?

Only give clean leaves without ssamjang, garlic or marinade on them. Skip any leaves with seasoning.
