Why

Tomato leaves, stems and unripe green fruit contain glycoalkaloids such as solanine and tomatine, which can cause stomach upset and lethargy. Levels drop sharply as the fruit ripens, so ripe red flesh is fine in small amounts. If you grow tomatoes, keep pets from chewing the plants. Ketchup and tomato sauce contain salt, sugar, onion and garlic.

How to give it / if eaten

Wash a ripe red tomato, remove the green top and cut it small. Halve or quarter cherry tomatoes so they don't become a choking hazard. Keep treats under 10% of daily calories and skip ketchup and sauces.

Watch for these signs

Too much causes diarrhea, vomiting or an upset stomach. If your pet ate lots of leaves, stems or green tomatoes and shows drooling, vomiting, lethargy or wobbling, call your vet.
