Can dogs and cats eat Pumpkin?

Plain cooked pumpkin is fiber-rich and good for dogs and cats in small amounts, but avoid sweetened pumpkin porridge or pie.

Why

Pumpkin is rich in fiber and beta-carotene and low in calories, and its soluble fiber may help firm up or regulate stools. Raw pumpkin, the tough rind and the stem are hard to digest, and pumpkin porridge, pie and lattes contain sugar, milk and spices like nutmeg.

How to give it / if eaten

Remove the rind and seeds, steam or boil plainly and mash. Canned 100% pumpkin puree with no additives works too. About a teaspoon for cats and small dogs or a tablespoon or two for large dogs keeps treats under 10% of daily calories.

Watch for these signs

Too much can cause loose stool, gas or bloating. If diarrhea or constipation lasts more than two days, see a vet rather than relying on pumpkin.

FAQ

Does pumpkin help with diarrhea?

It may help mild loose stools, but it isn't a treatment. If diarrhea lasts over a day, contains blood or comes with vomiting or lethargy, see a vet right away.

Can I give pumpkin porridge (hobakjuk)?

Human pumpkin porridge contains sugar, salt and sweet rice, so we don't recommend it. Offer plain steamed pumpkin instead.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
