Can dogs and cats eat Potato?

Plain cooked potato is fine in small amounts, but raw potato and green or sprouted parts contain solanine, and chips and fries should be avoided.

Why

Sprouts, green-tinged skin and raw potato contain solanine, a glycoalkaloid that can cause vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. Cooking makes potato easier to digest and lowers the risk, but sprouts and green parts should be cut away regardless. Potatoes are starchy, so frequent feeding adds weight, and chips and fries are loaded with oil and salt.

How to give it / if eaten

Cut away sprouts and green areas deeply, peel, then boil or steam without salt or butter and mash. A spoonful or two is enough for a cat or small dog; keep treats under 10% of daily calories.

Watch for these signs

Too much cooked potato can cause loose stool, gas and weight gain. Raw potato or sprouts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, lethargy and wobbling.

FAQ

Can I give potato skins?

Skins are harder to digest and green areas can be high in solanine, so it's better to peel them.

My dog ate a few potato chips. Is that okay?

A few chips usually won't hurt; just make sure fresh water is available. If they were onion or garlic flavored, check with your vet.
