Why
Pork belly has thick fat layers and is very high in calories, and greasy food causes vomiting and diarrhea. Small dogs, middle-aged and older pets, and those with pancreatitis history often end up at the vet after a barbecue. It's usually eaten with ssamjang, garlic, green onion salad and salted sesame oil, and licking grill grease is risky too. Undercooked pork carries parasite risk.
How to give it / if eaten
If you want to share, cut off all the fat and give only small pieces of fully cooked, unseasoned lean meat; one or two fingernail-sized bits are plenty for cats and small dogs. Don't give fat, grease or seasoned meat. Call your vet if your pet ate a lot or has a pancreatitis history.
Watch for these signs
Within hours: vomiting, diarrhea or greasy stool. Repeated vomiting, a 'prayer position' (front down, rear up), a painful belly and poor appetite over 1โ3 days may mean pancreatitis.
FAQ
My dog ate a few pieces of pork belly fat.
Fat trimmings are nearly pure fat and can trigger pancreatitis. Call your vet right away if it was a lot for your dog's size or vomiting starts.
How is this different from lean pork?
Lean pork is a fine protein, but pork belly has a far higher fat ratio. See our pork page too.
