Can dogs and cats eat Bacon?

Bacon is extremely fatty and salty and can cause stomach upset or pancreatitis in dogs and cats; don't use it as a treat.

Why

Bacon is a high-fat, salt-cured, smoked meat. Fatty foods trigger vomiting and diarrhea, and small dogs or pets with a history of pancreatitis can develop it from fairly small amounts. The salt drives thirst. Pouring leftover bacon grease over kibble is especially risky.

How to give it / if eaten

Don't give it. One small piece can be watched, but call your vet if your pet ate several strips or licked up bacon grease. With a pancreatitis history, call even for a small amount.

Watch for these signs

Vomiting, diarrhea, greasy stool and extreme thirst may occur. Repeated vomiting, a hunched posture, poor appetite and lethargy over 1โ€“3 days may mean pancreatitis.

FAQ

My dog licked up bacon grease.

Grease is pure fat, which raises pancreatitis risk. Estimate how much and call your vet.

Are bacon-flavored dog treats okay?

Treats made for pets control fat and salt, so they're fine within the recommended amount. They're not the same as human bacon.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
