Can dogs and cats eat Duck (Cooked, Lean)?

Plain cooked lean duck is a good protein for dogs and cats; just remove the fatty skin and bones.

Why

Duck is a common pet food protein and is often used as an alternative for pets allergic to chicken or beef. Its skin and fat layer are thick, though, and eating them can cause stomach upset or pancreatitis. Cooked duck bones splinter like chicken bones. Smoked duck is salty and full of additives, so avoid it.

How to give it / if eaten

Boil or roast it plain, remove all skin, fat and bones, and cut it small. Keep it within 10% of daily calories as a treat; a fingertip-sized portion is plenty for cats and small dogs. Start small and check the stool.

Watch for these signs

Usually none, but fatty parts may cause loose stool, diarrhea or vomiting. With a new protein, an allergic reaction like itching is possible but uncommon.

FAQ

Is smoked duck okay?

Smoked duck is salty, fatty and full of additives. A slice or two just needs water and watching, but don't use it as a treat.

What about duck neck chews?

Dried duck necks made for pets are popular, but they can choke a pet if the size is wrong or it eats too fast. Supervise, and never give home-cooked duck bones.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
