Why
Eomuk is fish paste mixed with flour or starch, salt, sugar and seasonings, then fried. The salt and oil can cause stomach upset and thirst, and vegetable fish cakes may contain onion or green onion. Fish cakes from soup or tteokbokki soak up broth and sauce and are saltier and riskier still. They're chewy, so big pieces can be a choking hazard.
How to give it / if eaten
Don't give it as a treat. If your pet ate a piece or two of plain fish cake, offer plenty of water and watch. Call your vet if it ate a lot or the fish cake contained vegetables or came from tteokbokki. If you want to share fish, give plain cooked white fish.
Watch for these signs
Vomiting, diarrhea, extreme thirst and frequent urination may occur. Big pieces can cause gagging. If it contained onion, watch over the next days for weakness, pale gums and red urine.
FAQ
My dog ate a fish cake skewer.
Whether the wooden skewer was swallowed matters more than the fish cake. If the stick is missing, call your vet right away. If only the fish cake was eaten, offer water and watch.
Are pet fish cake treats okay?
Pet versions with reduced salt and additives are fine within the recommended amount. They're different from human fish cakes.
