Can dogs and cats eat Chicken Skin?

Chicken skin is very fatty and can cause stomach upset or pancreatitis in dogs and cats; share only the meat and remove the skin.

Why

Chicken skin is mostly fat, high in calories, and pets sensitive to greasy food will vomit or get diarrhea. Small dogs or pets with a history of pancreatitis can develop it from fairly small amounts. Skin from fried or roast chicken carries seasonings like salt and garlic powder. Fried chicken-skin snacks are even riskier.

How to give it / if eaten

Remove the skin and share only plain cooked meat. A bit of boiled chicken skin can be watched at home, but call your vet if your pet ate a lot or the skin was seasoned.

Watch for these signs

Loose stool, diarrhea and vomiting may occur. Repeated vomiting, a hunched posture, poor appetite and lethargy over 1โ€“3 days may mean pancreatitis.

FAQ

I gave a little skin from boiled chicken.

A little skin from plain boiled chicken is usually fine, but it's fatty, so stick to the meat next time. If garlic went into the pot, avoid parts soaked in the broth.

Isn't chicken skin good for the coat?

Fat does matter for coat health, but complete pet food already provides it in balance. Adding chicken skin mostly adds calories and pancreatitis risk.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
