Why
Lean pork is a good protein source, but it must be fully cooked. Raw pork can carry parasites, bacteria and the virus that causes Aujeszky's disease (pseudorabies), which is fatal to dogs and cats. Fatty cuts like pork belly raise the risk of pancreatitis, and ham, bacon and sausage are high in salt and additives.
How to give it / if eaten
Choose lean cuts like tenderloin or leg, trim the fat, cook all the way through with no salt or seasoning, and cut into small pieces. Keep treats under 10% of daily calories and always remove bones.
Watch for these signs
Fatty pork can cause diarrhea, vomiting and belly pain, and severe vomiting with a hunched posture suggests pancreatitis. Intense itching, drooling or odd behavior after raw pork needs a vet immediately.
FAQ
Can I give my dog a piece of pork belly (samgyeopsal)?
Pork belly is very fatty, and even one piece can cause diarrhea or pancreatitis in a small dog. Offer lean, cooked pork instead.
Are ham and sausages okay?
Processed meats are high in salt, fat and additives and sometimes contain onion or garlic powder. Don't use them as treats.
