Can dogs and cats eat Pineapple?

Ripe pineapple flesh is fine in small amounts for dogs and cats; just remove the spiky skin, tough core and leaves first.

Why

Pineapple is full of water and vitamin C, and nothing in it is known to be toxic. It is fairly acidic and sugary, though, so too much can upset the stomach or cause diarrhea. The fibrous core and rough skin can lodge in the throat or gut. Canned pineapple in syrup has far too much sugar.

How to give it / if eaten

Remove the skin, core and leaves and cut the flesh into small pieces. One or two pieces for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs is enough. Start with a tiny amount and check the stool afterward. Don't give canned pineapple or pineapple juice.

Watch for these signs

Too much may cause diarrhea, vomiting, or pawing at the mouth and drooling from the acidity. If core or skin was swallowed, watch for vomiting, poor appetite and constipation.

FAQ

Does pineapple stop dogs from eating poop?

It's a popular claim, but there is no scientific evidence that it works. Poop-eating has many possible causes, so talk to your vet or a behavior professional if it continues.

Can I give frozen pineapple?

Small frozen chunks make a nice summer treat. If they're rock-hard they can be tough on teeth, so let them thaw slightly or cut them small.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
