Can dogs and cats eat Grapes & Raisins?

Never give grapes or raisins to dogs or cats: there is no known safe amount, and even a few can cause sudden kidney failure.

๐Ÿšจ If your pet ate something toxic, note the amount and time and call your vet, an emergency clinic or an animal poison hotline right away. Do not make your pet vomit at home unless a vet tells you to.

Why

Grapes are well known to cause acute kidney injury in dogs, and tartaric acid is considered the leading suspect. Reactions vary enormously: some dogs eat many with no problem while others develop kidney failure from a handful, so no safe dose has been established. There are fewer reports in cats, but they should be treated as equally at risk. Concentrated forms such as raisins, currants, grape juice and raisin bread or cereal may be even more dangerous.

How to give it / if eaten

If your pet ate even one, contact your vet or an emergency clinic right away, before any symptoms appear: early treatment gives the kidneys the best chance. Write down the time and how many were eaten, and don't induce vomiting at home without a vet's instruction.

Watch for these signs

Within hours to a day: vomiting (often with grape pieces), lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhea and a tender belly. Over 1โ€“3 days, heavy drinking followed by little or no urine signals kidney failure and needs immediate care.

FAQ

Is just one grape dangerous for a dog?

It can be. There's no way to know in advance which pets are sensitive, so the safe move is to call your vet even after a single grape.

Are raisin bread and grape juice dangerous too?

Yes. Raisins are concentrated grapes and may be even riskier, so avoid raisin bread, cookies, cereal and grape juice as well. Treat it like eating fresh grapes and call your vet right away.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
