Why
Mango flesh offers vitamins A and C plus fiber, and nothing in it is known to be toxic. The big flat pit, however, can choke a pet or block the gut, and it contains small amounts of cyanide-forming compounds. The skin is tough to digest, and the high sugar content can cause diarrhea if your pet eats a lot. Cats don't need fruit, but a piece or two is fine.
How to give it / if eaten
Peel it, remove the pit completely and cut the flesh into bite-sized pieces. One or two pieces for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs is plenty; keep treats under 10% of daily calories. Skip dried mango and mango juice, which are packed with sugar.
Watch for these signs
Too much can cause loose stool, diarrhea or vomiting. If the pit was swallowed, watch for repeated vomiting, poor appetite, constipation and a painful belly.
FAQ
My dog swallowed a mango pit.
Mango pits are large and flat and can cause an intestinal blockage. Call your vet right away, even if your dog seems fine, to ask whether an X-ray or exam is needed.
Is dried mango okay?
Dried mango is concentrated sugar, and many brands add even more. If you want to share, fresh flesh in small amounts is the better choice.
