Why

Melons and Korean melon are watery, low in calories and not toxic. The hard rind can't be digested and may cause a blockage, and its surface can carry bacteria. The natural sugar can cause diarrhea in large amounts, and diabetic pets should skip it. Some cats are oddly drawn to the smell of melon.

How to give it / if eaten

Wash the outside before cutting, then remove the rind and seeds and dice the flesh. One or two pieces for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs is plenty. Throw the rinds away where your pet can't dig them out.

Watch for these signs

Too much may cause loose stool, diarrhea or vomiting. If rind was swallowed, watch for vomiting, poor appetite, constipation and belly pain.

FAQ

Can my pet eat Korean melon seeds?

The seeds are small and soft, so a few usually cause no trouble. Large amounts can cause diarrhea, so it's best to scoop out the seedy center.

Why do some cats love melon?

One theory is that melon's aroma shares compounds with meat smells, but it isn't proven. If your cat enjoys it, keep it to a tiny taste.
