Why
According to the ASPCA, small amounts of coconut meat or oil are unlikely to cause serious harm, but the fat can lead to vomiting, diarrhea or pancreatitis. Coconut water is high in potassium and isn't recommended for pets. The hard shell and fibrous husk can cause blockages. Claims that coconut oil improves coat or health are weakly supported.
How to give it / if eaten
Offer plain, unsweetened fresh coconut meat in tiny pieces: one or two for cats and small dogs, a few for large dogs. Start very small and check the stool. Skip coconut water, sweetened coconut flakes and the shell.
Watch for these signs
Too much may cause vomiting, diarrhea or loose stool, and the fat can trigger pancreatitis (repeated vomiting, belly pain, poor appetite, lethargy). If shell was swallowed, watch for vomiting and constipation.
FAQ
Can I mix coconut oil into food?
Evidence for benefits is weak, and it's very calorie- and fat-dense, which can cause weight gain or diarrhea. If you still want to try it, ask your vet about the amount.
Why not coconut water?
It's high in potassium, which can throw off electrolyte balance in larger amounts. Fresh water is all your pet needs for hydration.
