Why
Lotus root has no known toxins and offers fiber and vitamin C. Raw, it's hard and astringent, making it tough to digest and a possible choking hazard. There's limited pet-specific research, so small amounts are best. Braised lotus root (yeongeun-jorim) is cooked in soy sauce, sugar and syrup and shouldn't be shared.
How to give it / if eaten
Peel it, boil or steam it until soft without seasoning, and chop it finely. One piece for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs is enough. Start small and check the stool.
Watch for these signs
Too much may cause gas, constipation or loose stool. If a big piece was swallowed, watch for gagging or vomiting.
FAQ
My pet ate braised lotus root.
It's loaded with soy sauce, sugar and syrup. For a piece or two, offer plenty of water and watch; call your vet if a lot was eaten or vomiting or diarrhea continues.
Can I give the peel too?
It tends to hold dirt and is tough, so it's better to peel it.
