Can dogs and cats eat Eggplant?

Cooked eggplant is okay in small amounts, but as a nightshade it can upset sensitive pets; start with a tiny piece.

Why

Eggplant is a nightshade, like tomatoes and potatoes. Ripe cooked flesh isn't a major concern, but the leaves, stems and unripe fruit contain more solanine-type compounds. Pets with allergies or sensitive stomachs may vomit or get diarrhea, and its oxalates make it a poor choice for pets with a history of stones. Stir-fried or seasoned eggplant contains oil, soy sauce and garlic.

How to give it / if eaten

Steam or roast it plain, peeled or not, and cut it small. One piece for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs, only occasionally. Don't give raw eggplant, leaves or stems.

Watch for these signs

Vomiting, diarrhea or itching may occur. If a lot of leaves or stems were eaten, watch for drooling, lethargy or wobbliness and call your vet.

FAQ

My pet seems itchy after eating eggplant.

Some pets react to eggplant. Stop giving it, and call your vet right away if the face swells or breathing becomes difficult.

My dog chewed eggplant leaves in the garden.

Leaves and stems contain more solanine-type compounds than the fruit. If it was a little, watch closely; call your vet if a lot was eaten or vomiting or lethargy appears.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
