Can dogs and cats eat Asparagus?

Cooked asparagus is fine for dogs and cats in small amounts; raw spears are tough, so cook them soft and cut them small.

Why

Asparagus isn't toxic and provides fiber and vitamins. Raw spears are tough, so gulped pieces can catch in the throat or pass undigested. Too much may cause gas or diarrhea, and it can make urine smell strong. The ornamental 'asparagus fern' is a different plant and is toxic to pets.

How to give it / if eaten

Steam or boil it plain, trim the woody base and cut it into 1โ€“2 cm pieces. One or two pieces for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs is enough. Skip asparagus cooked with butter or salt.

Watch for these signs

Too much may cause gas, loose stool or diarrhea. Raw spears swallowed whole can cause gagging or vomiting. Eating asparagus fern berries can cause vomiting, diarrhea and belly pain.

FAQ

My cat chewed our asparagus fern.

Asparagus fern berries can cause vomiting, diarrhea and belly pain, and the sap can irritate skin. Call your vet if a lot was eaten or symptoms appear.

Its urine smells odd after asparagus.

That's normal, caused by sulfur compounds in asparagus. If there's also blood in the urine or straining, something else may be going on, so see your vet.
