Why
Catnip's nepetalactone triggers rolling, drooling and excitement in roughly half of cats that smell it, lasting about 10 minutes, while eating it can make them mellow. It isn't known to be addictive or toxic. Kittens and senior cats often react weakly. Eating a lot can cause vomiting or diarrhea. In dogs, it may have a mild calming effect.
How to give it / if eaten
Put a little dried catnip in a toy or sprinkle a pinch on the floor. A few times a week keeps it from losing its effect. For dogs, sprinkle just a tiny amount on food.
Watch for these signs
Eating a lot may cause vomiting or diarrhea. Some cats get temporarily aggressive when excited.
FAQ
Can cats get addicted to catnip?
It isn't known to be addictive. Frequent use can dull the response, so occasional use is best.
My cat doesn't react to catnip.
The response is genetic, and many cats simply don't react. Some respond to silver vine (matatabi) instead.
