Why
Japchae is glass noodles stir-fried with onion, spinach, carrot and meat, dressed with soy sauce, sugar, minced garlic and sesame oil. Onion and garlic damage red blood cells even when cooked and can cause anemia, and cats are especially sensitive. Soy sauce and oil upset the stomach, and the long, slippery noodles can cause gagging. It often sits on holiday tables within easy reach of pets.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet ate japchae, call your vet or an emergency clinic right away, even for a small amount. Tell them how much, when, and whether onion or garlic was in it. Don't induce vomiting at home without a vet's instruction.
Watch for these signs
The same day: vomiting, diarrhea, drooling or extreme thirst. One to five days later, watch for weakness, pale gums, fast breathing and red or brown urine.
FAQ
My dog only ate the noodles.
The noodles are coated in the sauce and onion and garlic juices. Estimate the amount and call your vet for advice.
Are plain glass noodles okay?
Plain boiled glass noodles aren't toxic, but they have no nutritional value and are slippery enough to cause choking. There's no reason to give them.
