Why
Pizza tomato sauce almost always contains garlic and onion powder, and onion toppings are common. These alliums damage red blood cells and can cause anemia. Cheese, pepperoni and sausage are high in fat and salt, risking vomiting, diarrhea and pancreatitis. A bit of plain crust is less concerning, but garlic dipping sauce should be avoided.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet ate pizza, note the amount and toppings and call your vet or an emergency clinic right away, especially if it ate sauce or onion toppings. Don't induce vomiting at home without a vet's instruction.
Watch for these signs
Within hours: vomiting, diarrhea or belly pain. Over 1โ3 days: repeated vomiting and a hunched posture (pancreatitis). After 1โ5 days: weakness, pale gums or red urine (anemia).
FAQ
Can I just give the crust?
A little plain crust without sauce isn't very harmful, but it's empty calories, and garlic-butter crust is risky. It's better not to share.
My dog ate a whole slice of pizza.
With sauce, cheese and toppings, the garlic/onion and fat risks add up. Check what toppings were on it and call your vet right away.
