Why
Tteok such as garaetteok, jeolpyeon, injeolmi and chapssal-tteok is made from rice and isn't toxic. But it's sticky and chewy, and pets that gulp rather than chew can get it stuck in the throat or esophagus and choke. Small dogs and fast eaters are at highest risk. Many rice cakes are also sugary, with sweet sesame, red bean paste or honey fillings.
How to give it / if eaten
It's best not to give it. If your pet gags or can't breathe while eating tteok, go to an emergency clinic immediately. If it can breathe but is drooling or struggling to swallow, the piece may be stuck in the esophagus, so call your vet right away.
Watch for these signs
Gagging, labored breathing, bluish gums, heavy drooling, repeated swallowing, or retching without bringing anything up.
FAQ
My dog swallowed tteok and keeps retching.
The tteok may be stuck in the esophagus. Don't try to pull it out with your fingers; go to an emergency clinic right away, and call ahead if your dog can't breathe or collapses.
Is it okay if I cut tteokguk rice cake very small?
Even small pieces can clump together from the stickiness, and tteokguk broth contains salt, garlic and green onion. It's simply not worth sharing.
