Why
Hard aged cheeses have less lactose than milk and are easier to digest, but they're high in fat and sodium, so frequent feeding risks weight gain and pancreatitis. Blue cheeses can contain mold toxins, and cheeses with garlic, onion or herbs should be avoided. Processed slices are quite salty.
How to give it / if eaten
Offer fingernail-sized pieces of a lower-salt cheese such as mozzarella or cottage cheese now and then. Keep treats under 10% of daily calories, skip blue or flavored cheeses, and check the stool the first time.
Watch for these signs
Diarrhea, loose stool, gas or vomiting are common. Severe vomiting, belly pain or a hunched posture after fatty food may mean pancreatitis and needs a vet right away.
FAQ
Can I give my dog sliced cheese?
Processed slices are salty, so give a small torn piece or two rather than a whole slice. Pet-specific cheese treats are a better option.
Can I hide pills in cheese?
It's a common trick, but some medications absorb poorly with dairy. Ask your vet whether it's okay for the specific medication.
