Why
Cream cakes are loaded with sugar, butter and cream, causing vomiting and diarrhea and, in larger amounts, pancreatitis. Chocolate cake carries chocolate poisoning risk, and sugar-free cake may contain xylitol. Cakes with rum or liqueur, or topped with raisins, grapes or macadamias, should also be avoided. Pets sneaking cake off the table at birthday parties is a common accident.
How to give it / if eaten
Don't give human cake. A small bite of plain cake or cream just needs watching. If your pet ate chocolate cake, cake with alcohol, sugar-free cake, cake topped with grapes or raisins, or a lot of any cake, call your vet right away. For celebrations, get a pet-specific cake.
Watch for these signs
Vomiting, diarrhea or bloating may occur. Repeated vomiting and belly pain over 1โ3 days may mean pancreatitis. If it contained chocolate, xylitol, raisins or alcohol, watch for those poisoning signs (hyperactivity, wobbliness, seizures, reduced urination).
FAQ
My dog snuck some birthday cake.
Check what kind of cake (chocolate, fruit toppings, alcohol) and how much. If it had risky ingredients or your dog ate a lot, call your vet right away.
Are pet cakes okay?
Pet cakes leave out sugar and risky ingredients, so they're fine. They still have calories, so split them over a few days.
