Why
The kernel isn't toxic, but its fat can cause vomiting, diarrhea and pancreatitis. The hard shells are sharp and indigestible and can lodge in the throat or intestines. Most pistachios are salted, and stored nuts can grow mold toxins (aflatoxins). Pistachio ice cream and desserts add even more sugar and fat.
How to give it / if eaten
Don't give them as treats. One or two kernels can be watched at home, but call your vet if your pet ate several in the shell or a lot of salted ones. Dispose of shells in a lidded bin.
Watch for these signs
Vomiting, diarrhea or drooling may occur. If shells were swallowed, watch for repeated vomiting, poor appetite and constipation; after a large amount, watch for pancreatitis signs (belly pain, repeated vomiting) or extreme thirst from the salt.
FAQ
My dog ate pistachios with the shells.
Shells are sharp and can cause a blockage. Note how many were eaten, and call your vet right away if your dog is small or ate several.
My pet licked pistachio ice cream.
A lick or two is usually fine. If it was sugar-free, check the label for xylitol.
