Why
Honey is mostly sugar, so frequent feeding leads to weight gain, dental problems and blood sugar spikes. Raw honey can contain botulism spores, which can be risky for young animals with immature guts and immunocompromised pets. Diabetic pets shouldn't have it. Cats can't taste sweetness, so there's little reason to offer it.
How to give it / if eaten
For a healthy adult dog, a tiny dab on the tip of a teaspoon now and then is plenty. Keep treats under 10% of daily calories, and skip it for puppies, kittens and diabetic or overweight pets.
Watch for these signs
Too much can cause diarrhea, vomiting or excessive thirst. If a young animal becomes weak in the legs or struggles to swallow after eating raw honey, go to a vet right away.
FAQ
Can honey help my dog's cough?
Honey doesn't treat coughing. Coughs can come from airway disease, heart problems and more, so have your vet examine your dog instead of relying on honey.
Can I give honey water to a puppy?
Raw honey isn't recommended for puppies. A weak puppy that won't eat may be having an emergency such as low blood sugar, so call your vet right away.
