Why
THC in cannabis affects pets' brains more strongly than people's. Edibles like gummies, chocolates and cookies, sometimes brought back from places where cannabis is legal, are concentrated, and those with chocolate or xylitol are riskier still. Most pets recover with treatment, but low body temperature, abnormal heart rate and coma can occur. Vets ask only to treat your pet, so being honest about exposure is important for care.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet ate cannabis or inhaled a lot of smoke, call your vet or an emergency clinic right away. Be honest about the product, amount and timing, and bring the packaging. Don't induce vomiting at home without a vet's instruction; a drowsy pet can inhale vomit.
Watch for these signs
Within 30 minutes to a few hours: wobbliness, dazed look, dilated pupils, exaggerated startle to sound or movement, dribbling urine and drooling. Severe cases: vomiting, low body temperature, slow or fast heart rate, tremors and reduced consciousness.
FAQ
Is CBD oil okay?
Even low-THC CBD products vary in quality and may contain THC. Talk to your vet before using any on your pet.
Is it okay to tell the vet the truth?
Vets ask so they can treat your pet. Knowing the cause avoids unnecessary tests and speeds up treatment.
General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
