Why
Cats are obligate carnivores that must get taurine, arachidonic acid and preformed vitamin A from food, and they need more protein than dogs. Dog food isn't formulated to those standards, so a cat living on it can develop taurine deficiency, leading to dilated cardiomyopathy or retinal degeneration. For dogs, of course, dog food is a complete diet.
How to give it / if eaten
In mixed homes, feed pets separately: put the cat's bowl up high and the dog's bowl where the cat can't get to it. A cat eating a few kibbles is nothing to worry about. Give dogs a complete food suited to their age and size, following the feeding guide.
Watch for these signs
A cat that eats a lot at once may vomit or have diarrhea. After long-term dog food, watch for lethargy, fast breathing, vision problems or a poor coat, and have your vet check your cat.
FAQ
My cat ate the dog's food. Is that okay?
Occasional bites are fine. If it becomes a habit, deficiencies can develop, so separate the bowls.
Can I feed my cat only dog food?
No. It lacks the taurine and protein cats need and can lead to heart disease or blindness. Always feed a complete cat food.
