Dog coats: keep them short or let them grow long?

Background

A short trim means fewer mats and burrs, easier upkeep and, many owners feel, a cooler dog in summer. Others point out that fur also blocks sun and heat and protects the skin, and shaving double-coated breeds too closely can actually make temperature control harder. The best length depends on the breed's coat type.
