Should pet tortoises be hibernated?

Background

Species that naturally brumate, such as Hermann's tortoises, may benefit from a proper winter rest for their body clock, breeding and long-term health. But mistakes in temperature control can lead to dehydration or illness during hibernation, so many inexperienced keepers keep tortoises warm and awake all winter. Some species never hibernate, so know your animal.
