Hedgehogs are wary by nature, so many keepers recommend short daily handling sessions so the animal learns your scent and stops raising its quills. Others note that hedgehogs are nocturnal and stress easily, so it may be kinder to build a great enclosure and let them approach on their own terms. Individual temperament should set the pace.
